Obtaining your Intermediate Rigging Licence, also known as the RI Ticket, is an essential step for anyone pursuing a career in the rigging industry. This qualification opens up numerous opportunities in construction, mining, and various industrial sectors. With a focus on practical skills and safety, the Intermediate Rigging Licence ensures that workers are well-equipped to handle more complex rigging tasks. In this article, we will explore what the RI Ticket entails, the process of obtaining one, and the benefits it offers.

The RI Ticket, or Intermediate Rigging Licence, is a certification that validates a worker’s ability to perform rigging tasks at an intermediate level. This certification is crucial for those who wish to advance their careers in the rigging industry, as it demonstrates a higher level of skill and knowledge compared to a basic rigging licence.

Key Components of the RI Ticket

The Intermediate Rigging Licence covers several key areas, including:

  • Rigging Techniques: Advanced methods for lifting, moving, and securing loads safely.
  • Safety Regulations: Understanding and adhering to safety standards to prevent accidents.
  • Equipment Handling: Proper use and maintenance of rigging equipment.
  • Risk Assessment: Identifying potential hazards and implementing control measures

The Path to Rigging Certification

Prerequisites for the Intermediate Rigging Licence

Before pursuing the RI Ticket, candidates must meet certain prerequisites:

  1. Basic Rigging Licence: You must hold a valid basic rigging licence, which serves as the foundation for intermediate training.
  2. Experience: A minimum amount of practical experience in the rigging field is often required, ensuring that candidates have a solid understanding of fundamental rigging concepts.
  3. Age and Health Requirements: Candidates must be at least 18 years old and meet specific health standards, ensuring they can perform rigging tasks safely.

Enrolling in Rigging Training

To obtain your Intermediate Rigging Licence, you must complete a recognized training program. These programs are offered by accredited training organizations and typically include both theoretical and practical components.

Theoretical Training

The theoretical aspect of rigging training covers essential knowledge areas, such as:

  • Load Calculations: Understanding how to calculate load weights and center of gravity.
  • Types of Rigging Equipment: Familiarization with different types of rigging gear and their uses.
  • Regulations and Standards: Learning about industry regulations and safety standards.

Practical Training

Practical training provides hands-on experience with rigging tasks, allowing candidates to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. This includes:

  • Setting up and dismantling rigging equipment.
  • Conducting safety checks and inspections.
  • Performing complex rigging operations under supervision.

Assessment and Certification

Upon completing the training program, candidates must pass an assessment to obtain their RI Ticket. This assessment typically includes both a written exam and a practical evaluation, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform intermediate rigging tasks safely and effectively.

Benefits of Obtaining an Intermediate Rigging Licence

Career Advancement

Holding an Intermediate Rigging Licence significantly enhances your career prospects in the rigging industry. With this certification, you can take on more challenging projects and responsibilities, leading to potential promotions and increased earnings.

Increased Job Opportunities

The demand for skilled riggers is high across various industries, including construction, mining, and oil and gas. Having an RI Ticket makes you a more attractive candidate for employers seeking qualified personnel to handle complex rigging tasks.

Maintaining Your Rigging Certification

Like many professional certifications, the RI Ticket requires periodic renewal to ensure that riggers remain up-to-date with industry standards and practices. This typically involves:

  • Continuing Education: Participating in ongoing training sessions to refresh and expand your skills.
