Course Description:

A Bridge and Gantry Crane HRW CB Licence is required to operate a bridge or gantry crane that is:

  • controlled from a permanent cabin or control station on the crane, or
  • remotely controlled with more than three powered operations, for example: a single hoist with four powered motions
  • multiple hoists with four or more powered motions (e.g. two non-synchronised hoists would typically have at least five powered operations—traversing by two, hoisting by two and travelling.)

What is a powered motion?

Each of the following a considered 1 powered motion.

  • North/south travel
  • East/west travel
  • Hoist up/down
  • Rotating attachment—this also includes the application of load estimation and slinging techniques to move a load.
Learning Outcome:

On completion of the course, participants will have gained the following skills and knowledge to

  • Plan Operations: Hazard management and consultation
  • Pre-operational Inspections: Crane and associated equipment
  • Set up: Crane and lifting equipment
  • Transfer Loads: Shift loads with slings or lifting devices
  • Conclude Operations: Shut down and secure crane following site specific procedures
Outcome:

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and a High-Risk Work Licence (class CB) will be issued through the WHS authority in your jurisdiction. (SafeWork/WorkSafe)

Bridge and Gantry Crane Course (CB Licence)

This intensive course provides comprehensive theory and practical training for operators who plan to work with bridge or gantry cranes controlled from a cabin or through remote control with multiple powered motions.

TLILIC0016 – Licence to Operate Bridge & Gantry Crane

On successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and will be eligible to apply for the Class CB High-Risk Work Licence through the relevant WHS authority (e.g. SafeWork/WorkSafe). The licence permits operation of cranes with complex control and multiple powered operations.

  • Workers and operators in industrial, manufacturing, warehousing, port, or construction environments where bridge or gantry cranes are used. 
  • Individuals needing a Class CB licence because the crane is operated from a permanent cabin or has more than three powered motions. 
  • Employers and site supervisors who require certified crane operators to ensure safety and compliance on-site.

Course Duration & Format

The course typically spans 5 full days, combining both theory and practical assessments. 
Training delivery may include face-to-face sessions, practical crane operation exercises, and assessment of competency against national standards. 

What You Will Learn

  • Pre-operational inspections of crane and lifting equipment — ensuring safety and compliance. 
  • Safe load handling and transfer techniques, including load estimation, use of slings/lifting devices, and load stability checks. 
  • Operational controls and crane manoeuvres: traversing, hoisting, traversing across bridge/gantry, and precise movements. 
  • Hazard identification, risk assessment and implementation of safe work practices before, during and after crane operations. 
  • Shutdown, post-operation checks, secure storage/shutdown procedures, and communication methods (signals, coordination) on site. 

Certification & Licence Process

After successful completion of both theory and practical assessments, participants receive a Statement of Attainment for unit TLILIC0016
This qualifies you to apply for the national High-Risk Work Licence (Class CB) via your jurisdiction’s WHS authority (e.g. SafeWork, WorkSafe).
