Prerequisites:Â
- Have held a Class C licence (not a learner) for at least one year
- Pass an eyesight test
- Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test and obtain a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) guidebook and logbook
Course Description:
A MR licence (Medium Rigid Licence) allows drivers to drive any 2 axles rigid vehicle, including a truck or bus and may tow a trailer of no more than 9 tonnes GVM (and within GCM limits). You can also drive a special purpose vehicle with a GVM of less than 15 tonnes (e.g. tractor or bob-tail prime mover).
Course Content:
On completion of the course, participants will have gained the following skills and knowledge to
- Conduct comprehensive pre-operational safety inspection
- Set up driving position and in-cab controls
- Start, move off, park, shut down, secure
- Operate automatic transmission and select appropriate gears
- Control steering smoothly through various traffic situations
- Apply brakes safely using correct stopping techniques
- Use accelerator smoothly for safe speed control
- Create and maintain safe crash avoidance space
- Create and maintain safe following and stopping distances
- Apply heavy vehicle road rules and directions
- Reverse heavy vehicle safely using mirrors and spotters
- Perform hill starts and stops without rolling back
- Final competency assessment of overall driving skills
Course Outcome:
Successful completion of the final assessment will allow you to upgrade your licence to Medium Rigid.
